Hi! I'm Kate Bellingham - you may know me from Tomorrow’s World in the 90's.
I’ve launched this UK-based community for parents with a science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) background who have children in primary school.
Please sign up to our School Gate SET mailing list to receive email newsletters and keep up with our developments - for example the new series of webinars we have planned and our training courses for parents.
Many of us are on a career-break or working part-time while we are bringing up children. We may already be helping with summer fairs or listening to readers, but we are a tremendous untapped resource for primary schools: we can help inspire children to be the mathematicians, scientists and engineers of the future, while also developing great skills to enhance our saleability in the workplace. Employers are crying out for talented people with STEM skills - by getting involved in our children's school we are developing the next generation while also furthering our own professional development.
As STEM Advocates there are many ways we can enjoy helping eg
- supporting in the classroom,
- advising on practical activities,
- running a STEM club,
- coordinating a Science week or a Tomorrow's Engineers day, or
- liaising with other STEM Ambassadors who can come to the school.
It needn't be daunting with the support of the School Gate SET online community - we're here to share the journey and help your school, and your children benefit from your STEM knowledge and experience. And who knows what benefit you'll get in return? We've got plans for training workshops and development sessions - let us know what you'd like us to do for you.
Here's how it works; this blog is the central resource for us. Follow School Gate SET on your favourite Social Media Platform and share your ideas, experiences and activity resources and I'll feature them on this blog. We're already on Twitter and Facebook. If you'd like to join our Facebook group, just email our Project Manager, Helen Roberts at SchoolGateSET@gmail.com.
And please spread the word!
Thanks
Kate
